I was six years old when Martina, my neighbor, came to drop off a book she’d written and illustrated with a few friends. Martina was in her early twenties and she had babysat me a few times. I loved the idea of knowing an author who actually lived close by.
In retrospect, meeting my first author was significant because it made me feel like becoming an author was something attainable. A seed was planted. I still have that book, it has survived three decades and several moves across the globe.
I hope to do the same as Martina, that is, to inspire others, especially children, to create in whatever medium calls to them.
I lived in Germany at the time, hence the German title. It translates to The Old Garbage Can.
